The Hamlyn Trust was created by a Trust Order in 1948 by Miss Emma Hamlyn in memory of her father, a solicitor and Justice of the Peace in Torquay, Devon.

"The object of the charity is the furtherance by lectures or otherwise among the Common People of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland of the knowledge of the Comparative Jurisprudence and Ethnology of the Chief European countries including the United Kingdom, and the circumstances of the growth of such jurisprudence to the Intent that the Common People of the United Kingdom may realise the privileges which in law and custom they enjoy in comparison with other European Peoples and realising and appreciating such privileges may recognise the responsibilities and obligations attaching to them."

In 2004 the Trust returned to its Devonian roots and is now administered from the University of Exeter where a complete set of the Hamlyn Lectures and the Trust Archive is held in the Lasok Law Library. Enquiries should be directed either to Sarah Roberts.

The Trust and Public Legal Education

The Hamlyn Trust is a charity that supports in various ways public legal education throughout the United Kingdom. In 1998 the Trust marked its 50th anniversary by granting special awards to institutions and projects which aimed to further public knowledge and understanding of the law. The Trust made '50th Anniversary Awards' to: Coatbridge CAB, North Lanarkshire, to assist the creation and testing of a pilot scheme in the use of computers for improving the quality of information and advice given in the interview room (in conjunction with Citizens Advice Scotland); Legal Services Agency Ltd, Glasgow, to provide bursaries to enable social workers, lay advisers and other interested persons to attend seminars and workshops on social welfare, housing and mental health law; Liberty, London, to facilitate the setting up a programme of training courses and seminars designed to improve the quality and effectiveness of advice given by advice workers in the public, community and voluntary sectors; Centre for Criminal Justice Studies, University of Leeds; to facilitate the UK Law Online website.

The Hamlyn Lectures

The Lecture Archive Since 1949 the Trust's primary object of making law more comprehensible to ordinary citizens has been achieved through an annual series of public lectures by distinguished judges, legal practitioners, academic lawyers and other eminent speakers that have become known as the “The Hamlyn Lectures” . From 2005 the lectures have been supplemented by an annual “Hamlyn Seminar” to promote the launch of the lectures around the time of their publication. Also in 2005, Cambridge University Press took over as publisher of the annual volume of the lectures. To mark the Trust's 60 th anniversary, and in order to bring past lectures to the attention of the widest possible audience, the Trustees decided in 2009 to seek permission from former Hamlyn Lecturers, or their estates, to convert the whole series, previously published by Sweet & Maxwell, into digital files and to make these freely available to scholars and individuals for private study. As a result of the Lecturers' generosity in granting copyright clearance, the Trustees are now able to make the contents of earlier and inaccessible Lectures available not only to legal scholars and law students, but also to “Common People” both in the United Kingdom and far beyond. The free downloading of searchable files is intended for private use only, and not for commercial gain, but for those who share Ms Emma Hamlyn's vision and wish to support the work of the Trust in promoting public legal education, voluntary charitable donations can be made by contacting Sarah Roberts in the first instance.
