Welcome to the School of Law
Law Library and European Documentation Centre
What our students say:
"One reason I chose Exeter is because it's a really friendly place...another was how beautiful the surrounding area is, with the beach and Dartmoor on your doorstep...The mixture of workshops and lectures gives a good in-depth teaching basis which you can take further with independent study...Overall studying and living in Exeter has been an amazing experience and if I had to choose again, it would definitely be Exeter!"
Louise Hawkins, LLB
The University of Exeter is an exciting and lively place to study Law. The School has an international reputation for excellence in both teaching and research. Academics, visiting lecturers and students from across the world are attracted to the School.
Over 80 years of Law at Exeter
In 2005 we celebrated 80 years of Law teaching at Exeter and over the years we have acquired a longstanding international reputation in the fields of commercial, European and international law, with expertise in both common law and civil law jurisdictions.
The Law School, based on the University’s Streatham Campus in Exeter and Cornwall Campus near Falmouth, consists of some 550 undergraduates and about 100 postgraduates, with around 35 teaching members, including seven professors. In our undergraduate degree programmes, and at postgraduate level, we offer a wide variety of subjects. There is an international community with students from over 70 countries studying in the school over the last five years.
Quality research
We have a successful history of research in Law; the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) showed 75 per cent of our research to be of international quality with 10 per cent considered world leading. The research interests of our staff range across the entire spectrum of legal topics, with our academics offering research supervision in their specialist fields.
The School was a founding member of the European Law Faculties’ Association (ELFA) and has an established Centre for European Legal Studies (CELS) at the Streatham Campus.
Research led teaching
All members of teaching staff in the Law School engage in original research and scholarship. This leading research feeds directly into our programmes, ensuring that our students are exposed to the latest theories and legal thinking. High-profile figures from both the British and overseas judiciaries, as well as members of the European Commission, visit the School to give lectures on topical subjects. Our academics offer their own specialist subjects and a wide range of options are made available to students at both campuses by means of on-site teaching and video-linked lectures.
