I am Professor of Law and Director of Postgraduate Taught Studies.

I am the Director of the Exeter Centre for International Law.

Research

My research builds upon my cross-expertise in international criminal law and human rights law as well as my inter-disciplinary expertise (law, forensic sciences, criminology) to analyse genocide and other international crimes. My current research investigates the use of forensic evidence both in the investigation and prosecution of atrocity crimes and in the identification of victims and the building of post-atrocity memory. 

I am currently working with Professor Mark A. Drumbl (Washington and Lee University, USA) on the aesthetics of atrocity prosecutions. Together, we published a blogtext on the aesthetics of the barely alive on trial at the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia. We also edited a special issue of the International Criminal Law Review on ‘The Visualities and Aesthetics of Prosecuting Aged Defendants’ as well as Sights, Sounds, and Sensibilities of Atrocity Prosecutions, which will be published in summer 2024. This edited volume unlocks the look, sound, smell, taste, and feel of justice for massive human rights abuses and reimagines what an atrocity means, reconsiders what drives the manufacture of law, and reboots the role of courtrooms and other mechanisms in the pursuit of justice. It unveils how law translates sensory experience into its procedures and institutions, and how humanistic inputs shape perceptions of right and wrong.

Biography

I started my academic career as a lecturer, and then senior lecturer, in law at Exeter Law School (2004-2011). From 2011 to 2021, I was Rosalind Franklin Fellow and then Professor in Comparative Criminal Law and International Justice at the Department of Criminal Law and Criminology at the University of Groningen (Netherlands). In 2016, I took up a Visiting Professional position in Chambers at the International Criminal Court. In 2021, I was Professeure invitée at the Institut d'Etudes Politiques d'Aix-en-Provence (Sciences Po Aix, France). Since October 2021, I am Professor of Law at Exeter Law School where I am the Director of Postgraduate Taught Studies.

I am Editor-in-Chief of the International Criminal Law Review (Brill) and of the book series Studies in International Criminal Law (Brill Nijhoff Publishers).

I am also one of the creators and editors of the academic journal Human Remains and Violence: An Interdisciplinary Journal (Manchester University Press).
