Dr Aysem Diker Vanberg

Aysem is an Associate Professor in Law at the University of Exeter School of Law, where she leads the Center for Science, Culture and the Law at Exeter (SCuLE). She sits on the Executive Committee of the British and Irish Law, Education and Technology Association (BILETA).

Her research examines how competition law and regulation adapt to digital markets, with a particular focus on the application of Article 102 TFEU to online platforms, the EU's Digital Markets Act, and the competition and governance questions raised by generative AI. She also works on access to justice, including the role of arbitration and online dispute resolution in resolving competition disputes, and on the interaction between corporate sustainability obligations and EU competition rules. She is currently writing a monograph on EU competition law in the age of generative AI.

Aysem contributes regularly to policy consultations on law and technology. She has authored or co-authored submissions to the UK Government on generative AI, the AI White Paper, data protection reform and the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology's Technology Adoption Review, as well as written evidence to Parliament on the draft Online Safety Bill and to the Justice Committee's 2025 inquiry on access to justice.

Before joining Exeter, Aysem was a Senior Lecturer in Law at Goldsmiths, University of London. She is a qualified Turkish lawyer and a qualified European Patent Representative, and worked as lead in-house counsel for MAN Nutzfahrzeuge AG and Cimpor Cimentos de Portugal before moving to the UK. 

She holds a PhD from the University of Essex, an LLM from the University of Bremen and an LLB (Hons) from the University of Ankara. She is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
