Beatriz is Associate Professor of Law at the University of Exeter, where she is Director of the LLM in Intellectual Property and Technology. She is also a Fellow at the Digital Speech Lab, UCL, and Adjunct Professor at the Paris School of International Affairs, Sciences Po Paris.

 

Trained as both a lawyer and a social scientist, Beatriz's research examines how legal and regulatory frameworks respond to technological change, with a particular focus on platform governance and competition in digital markets. She was Principal Investigator of Platform regulation in Brazil and in the UK: designing and enforcing 'duty of care' frameworks, funded by the British Academy's ODA Challenge-Oriented Research Grants 2024 Programme and supported under the UK Government's International Science Partnerships Fund.

 

Beatriz has advised policymakers and governments on law and technology issues, including contributions to UK Parliamentary inquiries, and has served as a specialist consultant on competition and digital markets for Brazil's Ministry of Finance. She currently works as a consultant for the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), supporting the development of abuse of dominance guidelines at Brazil's Administrative Council for Economic Defense (CADE).

 

Before joining Exeter, Beatriz held postdoctoral fellowships at UCL's School of Public Policy and at the Blavatnik School of Government, University of Oxford, and taught law at the University of Sussex. She holds a PhD in Economic Law and Political Economy from the University of São Paulo and an MSc in the Social Sciences of the Internet from the Oxford Internet Institute, University of Oxford.
