Dr Ece Ban

Ece is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Exeter, working for the SCiDA Project. Her research focuses on competition law and policy in digital markets.

She completed her DPhil in Law at the University of Oxford. Her doctoral thesis, ‘Big-data and Algorithm-Driven Abuse of Dominance: Analysis and Limiting Principles under Article 102 TFEU’, examined how competition law should address abuses of market power involving data and algorithms. Undertaken under the supervision of Professor Ariel Ezrachi, her research explored the legal standards and limiting principles that should guide intervention in digital markets.

Her wider research examines the relationship between competition law and regulation, including the role of regulatory standards in assessing abuses of dominance. She also works on competition, innovation and gender, exploring the innovation gender gap under EU merger control. Her work has been published in the Journal of European Competition Law & Practice.

Before joining Exeter, she taught EU Law and Competition Law and Policy at Oxford, where she also co-convened Oxford’s Competition Law and Policy Discussion Group. Before her DPhil, Ece completed an LLM at New York University and an LLB at Bilkent University, graduating magna cum laude. She worked as a research assistant at NYU School of Law, served as a judicial intern at the New York State Supreme Court and worked in private practice in Istanbul. She is also a lawyer admitted to the New York State Bar.
