Dr Emma Marshall specialises in access to justice and everyday experiences of legal systems. Emma has expertise in academic and policy research on access to legal advice, including the impact of the Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders Act 2012 on civil legal aid and the operation of the Exceptional Case Funding scheme.
Emma has a background working in the not-for-profit sector with regional and national charities, and is committed to collaborative ways of working both within and beyond academic settings. Prior to becoming an academic, Emma ran a drop-in centre for refugees and is now a trustee for the charity Refugee Support Devon. She is currently a member of the steering group for the Routes network, and is a co-lead of the Justice and Violence Studies research network.
Emma is an interdisciplinary scholar and was awarded her PhD in Human Geography from the University of Exeter in 2021. She graduated from the University of Warwick with a BA(hons) in Politics and International Studies in 2007, and completed her LLM in International Human Rights Law at the University of Exeter in 2010. She also has an MRes in Critical Human Geographies from the University of Exeter, awarded in 2015. Emma has previously taught in both the Geography department and Politics department at the University of Exeter. She is a Fellow of Advance HE.
