Dr Emma Marshall (She/her)
Lecturer
Law School
Dr Emma Marshall joined the Law School in September 2020 as a postdoctoral researcher, and has been a lecturer in the Law School since July 2022. Emma's research focuses on national policy issues around access to justice, particularly in the context of legal aid provision and the impact of the Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders Act 2012. Emma has a background working in the third sector with regional and national charities, and is interested in developing collaborative ways of working both within and beyond academic settings. Emma is currently a member of the steering group for the Routes network, and is a co-lead of the Justice and Violence Studies research network.
Emma completed her PhD in Human Geography at the University of Exeter in 2020 (awarded 2021). Her doctoral research examined the experiences of people seeking immigration advice in the region, as well as opportunities to improve advice provision, particularly in response to the limited accessibility of free and affordable services for immigration and asylum matters in South West England. During her doctoral research Emma helped to set up an Exceptional Case Funding Clinic for legal aid applications as part of the Community Law Clinic at the University of Exeter.
Emma is originally from Exeter and studied in the Law School in 2008/2009, gaining her LLM in International Human Rights Law. She also has an undergraduate degree in Politics and International Studies from the University of Warwick, and an MRes in Critical Human Geographies. Emma has previously taught in the Geography department and Politics department at the University of Exeter. She is a Fellow of Advance HE.
