Dr Faye Bird

Dr Faye Bird is a Lecturer in Law at the University of Exeter. Prior to joining Exeter in 2022 she was a Lecturer in Law at the University of Lincoln, and before that she was an Associate Lecturer at the University of Reading. Faye is a graduate of the University of Exeter, where she completed her LLB in Law and of the University of Reading, where she completed her LLM in international law and her PhD in law. In 2019 Faye worked as a policy advisor within the UK Cabinet Office Open Innovation Team and the UK Home Office Tackling Exploitation and Abuse Unit.

Faye’s research centres on public international law in the context of international peace and security. She uses feminist, gendered and broader socio-legal methodologies to question international legal responses to situations of armed conflict. One strand of this research was developed in her doctoral thesis which explored the UN Security Council’s gendered outputs in response to terrorism. Faye was awarded the Prosperity and Resilience Strand of the University of Reading PhD Researcher of the Year Award 2020, and the University of Reading Law School PhD Researcher of the Year 2019 and 2020. Her doctoral research has also been published in Feminist Legal Studies and Laws. A second strand of Faye’s research considers fundamental questions of international law applying feminist legal theory to interactions between legal regimes, legal interpretation, and statehood.

Faye is currently the module convenor for Gender, Sexuality and Law (LAW3011) and teaches Tort Law (LAW2015). She has previously taught Criminal Law, Land Law, and Legal Systems and Skills.

As the law school’s Widening Participation Officer, Faye is passionate about increasing access to legal education for those from underrepresented backgrounds. Faye is also a member of the law school’s equality, diversity and inclusion committee and is part of the law school’s self-assessment team for the Athena Swan Award.

Dr Faye Bird has been awarded the following qualifications:

• PhD in international law from the University of Reading
• LLM in International law from the University of Reading
• LLB in Law from the University of Exeter

Faye's doctoral thesis was titled: 'Gendering ISIL in Iraq and Syria: A feminist critical discourse analysis of international law and the UN Security Council's response to the 'Islamic State''. Her research was supervised by Dr Lawrence Hill-Cawthorne and Professor Aleardo Zanghellini.
