Dr Tania Barton

Senior Lecturer
Law School

I am a senior lecturer at the Law School, currently focusing on French constitutional law, French administrative law and English contract law.

Initially I studied in Paris for four years, and so I have a French law degree (licence) and a master's degree in French business law (maitrise) from the University of Paris XI. I then moved to London and obtained the Post-graduate Diploma in Law (PGDL) and Legal Practice Course (LPC) certificate from BPP Law School.

I worked as a trainee solicitor and then solicitor at Linklaters in their London and Paris offices, qualifying into their debt finance team. I then moved to White & Case in their London office where I worked in debt and equity finance. I later had the opportunity to move to Switzerland, and there I first worked as legal counsel (in-house lawyer) for a hedge fund (Man Investments), where I structured financial products to comply with European market rules. After my children were born, I worked as legal counsel for a pharmaceutical company (Amgen), focusing mainly on contract law.

After moving back to the UK, I continued my studies at the University of Exeter and was awarded the Post-graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE), a master's degree in International commercial law (LLM), a master's degree in research (MRes) and my PhD in law, looking at consumers with dementia.

I have much experience teaching, having taught at BPP Law School in London and the University of Law, teaching on their post-graduate courses: the Legal Practice Course, the Solicitors Qualifying Examination and the Post-graduate Diploma in Law. I have also in the past taught at the University of Exeter a variety of English and French law modules.

I am delighted to now be back at the University of Exeter, focusing on teaching on the English law and French law LLB, as well as the Law LLB.
